  Everything from the phone call with Lecktor onwards elevates the film from great to all-time. The climax with In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida blaring as the sun begins to peak through this insane house leaves me breathless. Simply one the greatest thrillers of put to film, my man.

  This gets a half star because Tony Shalhoub is the man. Everything about this was off putting so I’ll focus on my biggest complaints. 1) Mr. Monk being suicidal feels like it’s only there to bate the audience into feeling something in this soulless husk. It adds nothing, it does nothing. The original show was a much more interesting portrayal of his grief without him going “I’m going to kill myself” every 30 seconds. 2) There’s no mystery.   A film that stuns in every regard. I think one of the things that stuck out most to me was how much life happens to Aoki. His son is in the hands of his boss, the investigation is in the hands of the police, he’s at the mercy of forces beyond him. The people outside of wealth, outside of power, are forced to wait and listen while those within make all the calls.
