Beyond unsurprised to find out this was adapted from an MFA novel, the qualities of which (long dead stretches/ interesting parts buried in flashback and documentary sequences/ absolute nothing of an ending) Bateman brings over to the film adaptation in a way I didn't think was possible. Kind of aggravatingly competent.
Maybe the most purely beautiful Kurosawa I've seen so far (that dream sequence is up there with the best of them) but, feels like a dry run for Ran in more than a few ways - the silent battle/ aftermath scenes just aren't nearly as adept or visceral - or even as economical - as Ran's fortress attack.
