Well acted and directed, but I found it a slog having to watch such an insufferable character. I have no qualms about a film with unlikeable characters, but Whiplash borderline fetishises abusive behaviour.
The final scene is transfixing, and at first feels like a victim standing up to their bully, but the final shot spoils that ending. Ultimately, its about getting approval from your abuser, validating their cruelty.
