Arnold crafts a visually striking piece that layers social realism with elements of fantasy. This thematic layover transpires as an escape from the brutal nature of working class life, in which drugs, violence and poverty are prevailing aspects. Such serves a dual function for this sense of escapism, for both the viewer and Bird’s protagonist, Bailey. Whilst I wasn’t overly keen on the fanatical elements of the film, Arnold’s cinematography and conscious construction of characters creates a deeply resonant work. Her implementation of handheld camera, montage and layering, characterisation and improv-style acting all affirm her stance as a prolific social realist filmmaker.
