The odd thing about this movie is that the main subplot is amazing, whereas the main plot is fairly milquetoast. A harbor master (or something? He also owns a building and never goes back to the harbor after the opening) and especially his nephew are hilarious; the gags involving the downside of being an assistant to a vampire are ably executed, and their reactions to the supernatural oddities around them are both funny and human.
Eddie Murphy plays a few…
Some supernatural elements that come out of nowhere and some bad writing take this a step down from the first, but Turner and Douglas are still charming enough to make it work—though it never gets much beyond a second-rate Indiana Jones flick.
It’s closer to 3 1/2 stars for me; a great concept, great leads, but mediocre plotting and follow-through. Kathleen Turner truly shines, and it’s a shame she didn’t get better roles as time went on. The score is mostly poor and antiquated, but there’s a brief moment near the end where the sound of handclaps completely entrance the viewer in just the right way. It’s a little fun, but it had more potential than it reached. It might be ripe for a remake.
A wooden performance by Woods, a handful of forgettable characters, a silly storyline, dialogue that sounds like a child wrote it... Carpenter can direct suspense, but he’s not great at writing characters or dialogue, and this movie mainly shows his faults rather than his skills.
