saw this during Halloween at the Science Museum. Star-studded, explorative use of mixing animation with live action, admirable costumes and sets. drags a bit too long (probably because i was itching to explore the museum itself), but it was a perfect Halloween movie.
I find myself obsessing over every little details they put in, the portrayal of luxury, hard work, selfishness..
A joy to watch despite the grim theme and me constantly closing my eyes in fear. I love the blend of thick cultural heritage and belief in superstition, karma, and respect to our ancestors, starkly compared with the modern, uncaring life of the Americanized family. Korean directors has done it again.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
I will never watch a movie this good again. I love movies that introduces us to the characters slowly, the world built painstakingly to the point it looks like real life. Its not a movie. It's a peek at a real, very real life of these two boys somewhere in Japan. As strangers we were given the privilege to get to know them– and as strangers too we slowly zoom out of the story, leaving us with an open ending.
