disgusting. utterly filthy and erotic and almost beautiful. a vampire film that truly allows the vampire to be an abomination, something rotten and perverted and sickening.
the ending could’ve been a lot less rushed, but that’s my only big complaint. otherwise a great movie.
the cinematography, set design and costuming are painstakingly done. the carriage scene on the snowy road is delightfully spooky. the symbolism. the cats and the rats. the lilacs. the dialogue. willem dafoe.

Miyazaki really poured all of it into this movie. This is so Ghibli it hurts. It’s deeply confusing and profound in ways you didn’t think were possible and artistically jaw-dropping.
Mainly, I think, it’s about endings. I believe Miyazaki is representing himself with the grand uncle. He is the old man, the creator, the ancestor— he makes the art and the worlds in which his characters inhabit, the thirteen blocks are his thirteen projects, scattered across time and space. He is…
