Tom Hanks' performance in this film is incredible. The character of Captain Phillips is calm, collected and intelligent while interacting with the pirates, and the raw emotions Hanks displays near the end of the film are entirely believable and affected me quite deeply.

I think Albert's character was great, and in the beginning, I found Eva's quirky personality to be endearing. But as the movie progressed, Eva's deception made her seem immature and infantile. Once she betrayed him, I no longer cared about her. This made continuing the movie rather difficult.

"We'll get the prom queen impregnated". Sirens went off in my head. I was only 10 minutes into the movie and there had already been a rape joke. I understand that this was meant to display some kind of boyish debauchery, but that was a serious statement in my eyes. Threatening to close the door and "impregnate" someone? There is nothing worth joking about there.
Within 20 minutes, I despised all the characters and couldn't persuade myself to keep watching it. Perhaps that invalidates my opinion on the film, but I'd rather watch something I enjoy.
