Tender without sentimentality, NATIONAL ANTHEM is a film that honors its characters without pathologizing any of them. It's written, acted, directed and scored with economy, grace, an eye for beauty and an understanding of desire and its complexity. This film is unusually mature--it allows its characters to grow and evolve without feeling manipulative or predictable. This film gave me hope for the future of queer cinema. Special shout-out for the scene with a Melissa Etheridge song!
