The development of consciousness as a violent interstellar process enframed by the co-development of technology.

The Super Panavision 70 mm film stock and the ultrawide spherical lenses give many of the straight lines of the interiors an uncanny curvature. Mesmerizing in its tedium and singular artistic vision, my first Pedro Costa experience is one that immediately demands a rewatch. To quote critic (and girlfriend) Beatrice Loayza, "I've never seen anything like this." There is an image significance density and a complexity to the editing strategy that exceeds even Malick's opuses. In fact, Malick was a useful jumping off point in attempting to engage with Costa's radical subjective phenomenological approach to Vitalina's experience and memory. It's a portrait that is both highly constructed and seething with veracity.

One of the best films of the year and a must see.
