Vitalina Varela 2019
Mesmerizing in its tedium and singular artistic vision, my first Pedro Costa experience is one that immediately demands a rewatch. To quote critic (and girlfriend) Beatrice Loayza, "I've never seen anything like this." There is an image significance density and a complexity to the editing strategy that exceeds even Malick's opuses. In fact, Malick was a useful jumping off point in attempting to engage with Costa's radical subjective phenomenological approach to Vitalina's experience and memory. It's a portrait that is both highly constructed and seething with veracity.
One of the best films of the year and a must see.
