"he's a busy bee, you know"

illusive green spaces and elusive screen spaces. flowers blooming from ashen soil, art borne from the unspeakable.

i think what sets this apart from other films of its kind is the fact that it doesn't just represent the holocaust -- it's a film explicitly about the act of representing the holocaust. it's all problematised in those sequences where glazer pulls us out into an abstract, overtly filmic space (be it through soundscape or montage,…

taut, percussive, full of anguish. you never quite know when the cuts are going to come, let alone where they're going to take you.

feels like a huge oversight that none of the chocolate in this film looks even remotely edible, let alone delicious. also not amazing that the attempt at some sort of postcolonial reclamation narrative for the oompa loompas ends with it inadvertently looking as though they've voluntarily given themselves up to a life of perpetual enslavement.

but other than that- a good time! sweet, heartwarming, shamelessly genuine- go in six shots deep and you'll be in tears by the end (NOT a personal anecdote).
