I thought it was super relatable, especially the interactions between the sister and brother and the mother-child dynamic. There's a beautiful love in Chinese families that isn't always super overt but is so strong and emotional that it runs deeper than any of the conflicts in the movie (ex: sister-brother silently saying bye). It's focused on my generation of Asian-American but you can see how the dynamics/trauma transcend from grandparent to parent to child. No generation fully understands the struggles…
Probably my favorite WA film I've seen so far. I think the combo of WA & Roald Dahl is genius and it worked so well here. It was easy to follow and felt like a bed time story.
This is normally the exact type of movie I would despise aka men trying to big dick each other but I surprisingly enjoyed it because the fighting and shots were cool. I thought the CGI sharks were bad and the plot was confusing. It was also super not historically accurate-- women allowed in the stands?? But, at the end of the day, it was a movie about men big dicking each other and trying to save women but since it was a historical piece, I shall allow it some grace.
