Speaking strictly in musical terms, Summer of Soul is phenomenal. If not the best year for popular music, 1969 was at least among the most important, and the footage here is a testament to why -- there is such a shared passion between the stage and the audience, a near spiritual relationship that brings diverse communities together in the way only music can -- plus, the music itself is just really goddamn good. A very fun, charming and likable movie, with solid performances and a satisfying blend of drama and subtle comedy. The fact that it’s also just about 100% completely made up bullshit does perhaps make it a bit less interesting, but it’s hard to blame the movie for this.

An utterly unique slow whisper of a film, built upon vague uncertainties and things left unsaid, with performances that are as subtle as they are powerful. I greatly respect both what Todd Field set out to do and what he achieved with this movie, but whether I can say that I truly loved it I'm less certain of, if only because it feels like there's something here keeping me from connecting with the core of it. Still, worth your time if only for the fact that I can almost guarantee you've never seen a movie quite like this one.

There is no better cure for the stress and anxiety of election night than some of the best music you’ll ever hear. Everybody needs some bluegrass in their life.
