if you stick 2 lesbians in the 1950s with the generic plot of them not being able to be together giving one of them an explained life issue and the other absolutely nothing with a somewhat insufferable personality then you get carol.

whole movie was just ruined by the lack of seriousness and not because it was funny, it was just annoying
ruining perfectly good scenes by cutting into singing and dancing where in no way did the mood of the song represent the atmosphere of the scene
