From being infantilized by her mother and the forced sexual growth from her instructor, it was difficult for me to discern Nina’s personal desires from the expectations and influences of the people around her. I kept thinking, “is it worth it Nina?”. What’s more important is what she made out of her experiences. Could she live with herself if she couldn’t embody the role of Queen Swan? I think not. Ultimately, I felt like Nina’s finale was a tragic and moving display of her autonomy. I’ve always had a fascination with dying for the arts so I found Nina as a character deeply compelling
