    The Electric State

    ★★

The Electric State is another largely forgettable Netflix big budget blockbuster, often feeling as inert as the technology the film tries to rail against. The Russo Brothers have not been able to connect with audiences post Avengers: Endgame, with this continuing the trend as another largely cliche ridden entry in their filmography. Nearly everyone in front of and behind the camera seems to just be going through the motions, unable to deliver anything memorable. The visual effects are well done…

    Magazine Dreams

    ★★★★

Magazine Dreams is a relentless and at times deeply unsettling story of legacy, loneliness and trauma anchored by an extraordinary performance by Jonathan Majors. There is a relentless ferocity that Majors brings here, committing to Killian Maddox's heart wrenching struggle in his best work to date. Killian never shies away from the darker demons he's facing, showcasing just how the cruelty of others paired with a troubled mind can lead to tragedy. Controversy aside, this is still a deeply affecting drama that deserves to be seen.

    Novocaine

    ★★★½

Novocaine is an exuberant action-rom-com hybrid that embraces its wacky premise to the very end. Jack Quaid really shines as a sort of super powered hero tailored to his sensibilities, leaning into a dorky and inherently likable lead that you can't help but root for. Amber Midthunder and Ray Nicholson are both great here as well, with the latter truly emulating his iconic father with some wonderfully unhinged moments throughout.

The script works well, albeit with some suspension of disbelief…

  • Ash

    Ash

    ★★

Ash is an imitative sci-fi horror fever dream that attempts to replicate some of its iconic precursors heights, to mixed results. This film takes a unique approach to the script, giving the audiences bits and pieces out of order, providing for a disorienting experience that is intriguing at the onset but settles into a lull for the majority of the film. Flying Lotus gives some great music and visuals here, with the use of gels and deep neon colors throughout…
