Not that I needed to keep the tone from the beginning the entire movie, but l feel like it didn't really go anywhere. The characters were stressed but as the viewer, I wasn't. Since everyone was so dismissive of Ani, she didn't have as equal of an emotional force opposing her so it was a long time of watching her gain and lose everything while being ignored.
There was also unexplored potential between Ani and Igor and it's unfortunate they had an as abrupt and unsatisfying ending as they did.
Interested to know why it won best picture over other nominees.
Tbh I liked the first better. This one plays it more safe and I feel like it's a downgrade going from the stakes of being hunted to wanting to find a present for grandma. Also huge step down from Nicole Kidman to Hugh Grant but he's paying his dues to get out of Hollywood jail ig.
I should’ve known better than to listen to haters online because this adaptation stays true to the original but Halle Bailey also breathes new life into the character. It is really sure to emphasize the themes of family, staying true to yourself and the longing to go somewhere far away more than the original which I think will make it even more widely loved than the original. And if that doesn’t make you love it, Halle Bailey’s angelic voice will. Also, Melissa McCarthy’s performance as Ursula was spot-on and had the whole theatre laughing. 9.5/10
