Evil Does Not Exist 2023
It feels shot on an iPhone at times, which isn't a critique but a compliment. The opening shot is relentless. Hamaguchi just doesn't cut. He wants us to stare and think and appreciate and think. Some truly brilliant filmmaking choices mixed with heartbreaking story beats. Doesn't go where you expect, for better or worse. A human story about a human world where evil doesn't exist until it does.

Here I am, it's midnight, I chuck on the original Ring. Lights off, laptop on. 30 mins in, I'm thinking, this is a bit slow, but I'll go with it. Then, the movie starts getting scarier.
