My boy-friend got me to watch this film on our first film date. Surelly not an appropriate chioce, considering that the main character is a complete psychopath with no human emotions. It describes the perspective of evil, building its kingdom. Justice, moral and hope had left for fear and pain to proliferate. It’s the interior struggle of someone left outside, creating his own personal truth. The final part is insane, between religion and philosophy, Jack meets his fate.

Can't figure out how the gloomiest depiction of human vices, in the darkest way possible, turns out to have a 'moral' in it: the moral is that art has the ability to exaplain itself, even if put in a context of depravation and deterioration. Art can trascend the immorality. This is my own personal interpretretation.

Ellen sure has a thing for the mysterious type—dark vibes, seductive gothic drama, the whole package.
Eggers nailed it, staying true to the folklore roots. And of course a honorable mention goes to the cat.
Didn’t rate it five because it seemed like everything unfolded too quickly.  Moreover, the lack of deeper character development and the rapid progression made everything feel less impactful. Who is she? A witch or a random girl with a passion for troubled men?

Recently I went for a walk in the woods and at the sight of an old abandoned barn I had a huge ptsd from this film; was scared I could meet a spooky naked man covered in sharp spines. Yup.

Unhinged and perversely human.

The opulence of the roaring twenties. Totally liked the part when they showed the heavyness of the change, i mean the revolution that led to the introduction of the sound in the cinema; the old actors had to readapt as it revolutionized storytelling and not everyone was able to face the transition. The movie shows Cinema as a dynamical form of art, not pure nor statuesque; it’s rough and blunt. There’s more to cinema than mere rapresentation.
