It feels so wrong to not give it a lower score. But so does not giving it a higher score. The movie itself, just like most of Kusturica's work, shows us a Balkan that doesn't really exist. At least not outside the minds and prejudices of Westerners. I also see valid points in the criticism that it downplays the Serbian war crimes.
And while the movie did not succeed in building a momentum of "seriousness" with a "message for the viewer", very few movies managed to make me laugh and keep me fully engaged for 180 minutes as much as this one.Translated from by
