Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind 1984
Finally saw this in a theater and I’m positive I could write an entire essay on my thoughts but I’ll attempt to keep it brief here. I think what always strikes me most about this film is something that Miyazaki has harped on from the beginning: Details Matter.
Whether it’s the slow zooms on Yupa’s face when he’s considering a decision, the subtle way Nausicaä tilts her body while on the glider, or the tiny sounds of Mehve taking off;…

Arrival 2016
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Something I noticed on this rewatch is the amount of intelligence and care this film takes in delivering its plot elements. By trickle-feeding the viewer nostalgic vignettes with Louise's daughter you slowly grow more attached to her, despite knowing her tragic ending. In doing so, the audience can appreciate the beauty in her story as a whole, and, in a sense, experience life non-linearly - all while Louise goes through a parallel experience alongside us.
Also, when Amy Adams shushes Renner and starts reading her future book in her mind accompanied by loud ass page-turning SFX: that's the movies right there.

Challengers 2024
The last half of this pulls out an insane new camera angle like every 30 seconds, Guadagnino and his DP were unhinged in the best possible way. I’m also a sucker for an overpowering soundtrack and OH MY GOD, they made full use of Reznor’s techno-rock anthems.
Can’t believe how good this was from top to bottom - Zendaya might have the star power juice after all.

Mean Girls 2024
I’m not sure we needed a Gen Z-centric remake of this, especially one that is seemingly too afraid to fully commit to being a musical. The amount of times that a song would cut into a scene to explain what we just watched drove me crazy.
My brother played some of the Broadway cast recordings on the way home and the difference is night and day. The songs are clearly meant to deliver the plot themselves, not be tacked onto…
