  Oedipus Rex 1967

  Watched for my aesthetics class. 

  It just isn’t very visually appealing. The cinematography, set design, and colour palette didn’t seem to have much thought put into it. Story-wise, ancient tragedies also aren’t really my cup of tea, so I didn’t end up enjoying the story itself either. Great performances all throughout, though.

  The House 2022

  The main problem I had with this is that it prioritizes style over substance. The visuals, and stop motion animation were excellent, but all three stories were severely lacking in terms of plot and writing (especially the first two). It had potential, but lacked emotion, a compelling story, strong characters and good writing. I wanted to like this more.

  Given all the negative reviews, it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be, though I can’t say I enjoyed it. It has some compelling themes, but doesn’t seem to deliver them effectively. It was too abstract, and reliant on symbolism rather than having a cohesive story. While the movie very effectively builds tension over the first two acts, the payoff is incredibly bizarre and unsatisfying. Again, it seemed symbolic, but it wasn’t clear on what the metaphors were for. It still has great cinematography, performances, and set design, but those certainly don’t outweigh the negative aspects of the movie.
