the constant need to prove love through suffering and deprivation was so striking it came across as if it wasn’t even about God, but instead about the nuns individually and whatever ironically ‘superficial’ things they were running from. it’s interesting to think about if religion is used as an escape or a way to cope, and whether that’s a good thing or not
