    John Wick: Chapter 4

    ★★★★

Nearly a decade has passed since Keanu and company triumphantly returned to the action scene with John Wick

Like the titular character, director Chad Stahelski's first film in the franchise is lean, mean, operates with cold efficiency.

With each following entry, Stahelski and his crew elevated the scope and scale for Wick's trail of carnage, expanding the assassin's mythological backstory that originally served as a simple backdrop to the meticulously choreographed combat.

Though the second and third entries expertly balanced…

One can't envy the position Mr.Coogler found himself in.

As if the task of creating a follow-up to his monumental Black Panther was not daunting enough, the tragic loss of Chadwick Boseman only months before shooting left the filmmaker with an insurmountable challenge.

Would it be possible to even consider replacing Boseman, a performer who, within seconds, so masterfully owned the role of T'Challa?

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On

    ★★★★★

Perfectly bringing its themes of love, loss, and triumph to life through the lens of an instantly delightful anthropomorphic shell, filmmaker Dean Fleischer Camp weaves a tale to be savored by even the darkest of hearts.

Marcel's story is brought to life both by the wonderful voice work of Jenny Slate and Isabella Rossellini and the visual craft of its director, making incredible use of animation and stop-motion photography upon a gorgeous live action backdrop.

Fleischer Camp's film is the kind to come about only once in a while, showing what the result of a creative mind's perfectly executed vision looks like.

    Hellraiser

Where Clive Barker's original Hellraiser took audiences through an ultraviolent, sadosexual journey through the terrors of forbidden delights, David Bruckner's remake instead sends an invitation to the most harrowing circle of hell, Boredom.

Hellraiser's original debut was not quite a memorable dramatic tale itself, however, the recurring imagery of resurrection and flesh-ripping violence peppered throughout the film was more than enough to keep viewers hooked until its explosive finale.

2022's take on the mythos, however, is a misfire from the…
