Persona 1966
Watched at BFI southbank with an In-person introduction by Liv Ullman. This followed “In conversation with Liv Ullman” where the actor/director discussed her career with us.
Incredibly grateful to have spent the evening in the same room as one of the greatest actors of our time and watching this film in a sold out cinema, how it was meant to be seen.
Nothing more to say about Persona that hasn’t been said a million times before. Still haunting. Still incredible.
Looking forward to seeing Autumn Sonata with an In-person Q&A with Liv Ullman tomorrow!

Beauty Is Not a Sin 2024
Sometimes I love NWRs approach to filmmaking and then sometimes I think he just desperately wants to make adverts for Ducati and YSL. Really peculiar that he doesn’t just do that rather than pretend it’s a short film for Mubi?
His last 4 projects have all been like this and I think it’s fine if that’s the route he wants to go but let’s not pretend this is a film.

Muse 2025
Definitely feels like some kind of high fashion advert but at the same time the premise is incredibly enticing and any excuse to see Pawel Pawlikowski flex his approach to directing is good enough for me. I really love just how intentional he is with each image, even in something this small scale. I also just love when a director makes something for a specific medium and really gets something out of it. Not everything has to be revelatory but this is certainly fun and interesting but also beautiful to look at.

Longlegs 2024
Marketed to the TikTok crowd, Longlegs represents another in a long line of insecure modern horror films. It has a really strong opening, super formalistic cinematography and a menacing presence that is completely ruined in the first few minutes and never recovers. It goes in the most obvious directions and completely betrays all of its most interesting aspects. Nic Cage does far too much and kills every ounce of tension. This with the really questionable editing just leave me with a sour taste in my mouth for a film I was hoping (deep down) would be half decent.
I wish i’d just rewatched Kyoshi Kurasawa’s Cure

Aquadalesia 2023
Every time I regret going to film school i’m reminded that although it is mostly a dredge of insincere derivative drivel, there are moments of real shining hope and Aquadalesia is just that.
The only reason to consider going to film school is that you sometimes get to connect with really incredible artists that encapsulate everything you love about the medium. James is one of these artists. His work is incredibly sincere and deeply moving in a way that is…
