absolutely loved the family scenes. all the interpersonal relationships felt so real and natural and all had the right about of nostalgia baked into it. beautifully shot, such loving and cute dialogue, and if the politics weren’t so frustratingly sanitized to appeal to a larger audience, this may have been a perfect movie for me... lean into the revolutionary politics of it all and stop doing everything you can to distance your narrative from the armed struggle, especially when the real life guy dabbled in it a bit more than was presented in the movie
Is this an anti-zionist movie? No, definitely not. Is it a zionist movie? Also no. To me, it’s a unique exploration of the material conditions that had a hand in building zionism. The way it communicates this historical process is entertaining, thought-provoking, and not too ahistorical imo.
I usually take issue with movies that communicate their context and subplots super overtly, but for some reason it didn’t bother me in this one. It’s very likely that I’m just biased towards…
