for a movie that was as panned as it was I actually don't think this is too bad of an adaptation, particularly bc quite a few of the performers who are not trained singers are giving serviceable performances and given the amount of bs that has passed for musical adaptation in the time since. I think as an overall piece Phantom is just ridiculous and ppl engage it with an expectation that there will be some point in time where it's "serious" and not the absolute absurd melodrama it's always been.
