Three hour cut is absolutely the way to go. There’s just no way the movie would have had the same effect on me without some of the scenes they cut for the theatrical version. I can understand why reviews were middling at the time of release, the absence of these scenes is incredibly noticeable in the theatrical cut, and the overall vision feels slightly diluted. I say “slightly” because the theatrical is still an astounding film. Seriously, it is amazing…

One of the absolute best. Gets even better with every one of my countless rewatches. Easily my favorite Altman. His contemporary set films are obviously what he is most notable for, as he was one of the most innovative and outstanding filmmakers of the 70’s, but I can’t help but feel from watching his take on the western that this was the film he was born to make.
