  Makoto Shinkai has often been hailed as “the next Miyazaki”, and I largely disagree with this. Shinkai is a great director not because he emulates one of the greats, but because he has crafted his own distinctive style over the course of his filmography. Each of his movies, early and recent alike feel uniquely Shinkai, with one exception. Children Who Chase Lost Voices does feel like Shinkai emulating Miyazaki to a disappointing result.
