Wanted to like this so much more than I did and almost certainly will enjoy it more on rewatch, as I do with all of Eggers’ films. I didn’t expect a big narrative departure as I’ve seen other reviews suggest- his films tend to be pretty straightforward plot wise and I’m sure the simplicity of the Dracula narrative was enticing to start. The psychosexual “spin” was a bit underdeveloped although it led to that mortifying final shot of the two…

Nickel Boys 2024
I wasn’t expecting a memory play shot in first person to be one of the best films of the year, but, Christ, what a movie. Stunning cinematography, beautiful and haunting story, and some incredible, grounded performances. Absolute travesty that the Academy isn’t giving this one its flowers simply because it’s not a straightforward, traditionally shot narrative, but do we expect anything less after those ballot comments were published?
