Think my earlier review was a bit too harsh, but ultimately can't see this movie reaching higher than a 6.5.
The aesthetic vision feels completely disorganized. Some of the comedic moments feel a bit forced, as does, in some cases, the team's angst toward one another and the "ticking time bomb" plot. I think I just dislike Whedon's directing style compared to Favreau, Johnston, and Branaugh (and, of course, later, Gunn and the Russo brothers).

Genuinely much better than I remember. The Shakespearean drama of the first half or so of the movie felt distinct from what Marvel had hitherto offered, and it had me really hooked. A good film with some great characters set in some fun setpieces and emotional moments. Feel like Bilbo is a more engaging and relatable protagonist than Frodo and Martin Freeman was perfectly cast. The score and settings were si wonderfully evocative. Rhadagast's bunnies are so cute!

Good in a different way than I would usually award. The texture here is just perfect. The sound design, the color palette, the costumes, the music, the casting. It's all got such a perfectly engineered mood. A film with as solid and complete direction as a single painting.
Quintessentially French. Like a Monet painting or a Debussy piece, it leaves one with a unique impression in the mind. It is less a full narrative and more a portrait of the oddly attractive loneliness of the drifter-turned-protagonist. Beautiful.
And just so cool.
