Fuck me. There were times in this where I thought this was gratuitously nasty trash, and times where I was so enthralled and tense and excited and squirming that I couldn't tear my eyes from the screen, even as the sheer repulsiveness of everything I was watching made me feel like doing so would be a very good idea. I don't see my rating going any higher with time, I think upon reflection I might end up going a decent bit lower, but my immediate feeling is that it's one of the most distinctive, effective, and genuinely horrifying horror films I've ever seen.

Stage Door Canteen 1943
Not a good film in the conventional sense, with an absolutely wafer thin plot and a tone that mixes self congratulation and cloying sentimentality (and of course, overt racism!) But as a bit of cultural and political history, capturing a very specific and significant moment in America, I can't deny I took a lot of enjoyment out of it, and won't forget it in a hurry.

LOVED this, thought it was completely enthralling. Leaving the cinema I felt quite bereft in the sense that I knew I wouldn't be experiencing anything as viscerally exciting as it in a fair while.
