After watching this film for a second time, I felt it important to write out my thoughts and interpretations in a more concise manner. The beauty of Werckmeister Harmonies, to me, surpasses understanding.

Often within stories, the answers to the questions posed can be found within the opening lines; a thesis from which the participant may return to again and again before the tale’s conclusion. Werckmeister Harmonies is one such story. Bela Tarr’s philosophical epic asks much of the viewer…

    “Not for me”

Pitch Black harkens back to a lost, forgotten age of Science Fiction storytelling and action where quick cuts and musical riffs are only matched by the count of cheesy one-liners.  Vin Diesel is fantastic as Riddick; the rest of the cast bringing a lot of energy to the film as well.  All-in-all, Pitch Black is the definition of a guilty pleasure film for me.

“Do you still say your prayers?”

Playing off the fear of the Satanic Panic that gripped America in the late 20th century, Longlegs revels in the despair and malaise of those who willingly leap into damnation.  The film, reminiscent of Kurosawa’s Cure, leads the viewer down a spiraling path of madness until we must confront the external evil behind this world.

Longlegs is a rare gem in the horror genre, perfectly paced and thematically fascinating.  While some of Nick Cage’s antics didn’t land for me, this is a fantastic film.

“Is this society…is this where we’re living…the only one available to us?”

“What do you think about my boner?”

Megalopolis is a film of pure contradictions; simultaneously a wondrous monument of artistic achievement and the most terrible film ever made.  It combines trite understandings of high school philosophy with the truly profound, the worst dialogue outside of pornography with actors giving the performance of a lifetime, hideous visuals captured with breathtaking cinematography.  I hate this film and yet adore its…

“Oh, my soul, let me be in you now. Look out through my eyes, look out at the things you've made. All things shining.”

What is the purpose behind the suffering in our world?  Why are men so quick to abandon good for evil; visiting only misery upon one another?  What reason is there amidst all manner of madness?  Is there a presence unseen; one implicit within the hearts of man?  If we are evil, then the goodness that emanates…
