The characters in the real world story just aren’t compelling. There was no complexity in them. The thriller plot was somewhat interesting.. and if it wasn’t being interrupted every 20 minutes by some mopey unloved wife reading a book then it might’ve been good. The book reading flashbacks weren’t necessarily a terrible gimmick, it was just terribly distracting because the rich cheating couple is just such a boring trope. Done with interesting characters, it could have foiled the thriller b-plot…

similar vibes to the hangover, but less funny. Not really subversive or stunning. Most of the comedy felt like scraping the bottom of the barrel, particularly the bathroom comedy. It made me chuckle occasionally, but without ever feeling too much. really there’s nothing to say as it wasn’t too remarkable at all.

Uninspired cinematography. 2.5 hours and the pacing is sleep inducing. most of the actor’s performances aren’t too moving. The twist wasn’t anywhere near good enough to make up for all of its shortcomings. Jackman’s character was so tropey it was hard to take serious. The only way it was ahead of it’s time was that it was one of those shitty maga qanon movies just made in 2013. Gyllenhaal was compelling at times, but all in all this movie was a chore to watch.

A lazily, predictable story. There is no really engaging commentary on the war on drugs or bigotry. Eastwood’s character’s racist slips feel more like comic relief than any meaningful recurrences. The workaholic who grows old and sad without family is a timeless theme, but it just presents as a cheap cop-out to a unique narrative in this story. Nothing about Eastwood’s performance struck me as some meditative foil to his previous westerns. It’s not necessarily bad that the movie doesn’t…
