Such an underrated gem to come out of A24, a film that is very reminiscent of The Vvitch. A patriarchal family unit struggles with the paranoia and uncertainty of the wilderness outside, and when outside factors influence their decision making, it would seem there was no hope from the beginning. An uncertain, unsettling film, with the director leaving the ending up to a total audience interpretation.
What's up with Michael's mask in this movie? Did they lose the original costume and prop designer? Looks like he forgot the original at home and they had to make another one using napkins.
I could understand why this film remains a cult hit amongst the silent hill game fans and horror fans alike. Not quite a psychological horror film, but instead an unsettling take on classic Silent Hill. The constant droning soundtrack and industrial imagery of an old coal town really is deeply unnerving, and throw in a few well realized characters from the game series, and it's an enjoyable flick. The ending is a little esoteric, but a nice twist, regardless.
