blue lagoon is a more profound and existential look into the human condition than even 2001 a space odyssey, which is pompous where this is modest and complicated where this is simple.

not sure if i actually believe that. but i think i just prefer how straightforward and actual this film is in its messaging. it made me think about 2001 for its discussions of the primal and humane, but calling them ‘discussions’ in 2001 is a stretch. 2001 is a TASK to relate to, where this bares a direct resemblance to our human experience and directly questions and theorises it.

(i’m not justifying cheating i promise, it’s just more complicated than that). i think it paints an abstract portrait of the difficulties of desire…

reminiscent of the swedish director roy andersson for its tableaus, dry humour, deadpan performances and lack of dialogue. this film honours that which i think is the whole point of film, which is the exclusively audio-visual. it exploited both of these elements throughout and didn’t neglect its use of purposeful sound, despite the lack of dialogue. the meticulous blocking is akin to choreography which is highly enjoyable to watch. uncanny, almost surreal eye contact is a running theme and brings…
