This film is a spectacle. It tells the story of extreme greed and shows the dangers of capitalism and excess of wealth. We see Daniel Plainview’s rise on his way to becoming a rich oilman in the early 1900s, and eventually his fall. It’s symbolic to see Daniel alone in the end, drunk in his large house with no one to share it with, all of his family and friends cast from his life.
Daniel Day-Lewis gives on the best best performances of all time. He slips into the character of Daniel Plainview so naturally, it makes you think if he’s an oilman in real life.
