Enjoyed watching and it helped that the movie was self-aware of its cheesiness. Totally understand why this franchise is till running today
This is the first popular meta horror film, a genre that is self-aware of horror movie tropes
This film being a true Gothic epic was unexpected. What starts off slow ends with a thrilling bang. The scale of some scenes was incredible, and the underlying theme of First Amendment ideology was powerful. Charles Laughton as the Hunchback and Maureen O’Hara as Esmeralda steal the show.
The acting, script, sound mixing, and music was painfully horrendous, like the worst I've ever seen. This movie's only saving grace is that the gore was way ahead of its time and highly influential
This is the first splatter movie, a subgenre known for its extreme blood and gore
