To give it a point in it's credit, it does not rely on jump scares as the primary method of delivering something "frightening." On the other hand, it utilizes a large amount of build up, and then cuts the legs out from itself by equating showing something gross/nauseating as horrific. There was almost nothing in terms of story development, and you get the gist of it about 15 minutes in. After that is over two hours of a film teasing…
Scorsese is in unfortunate form on this one. Normally a good presenter of character studies of awful people (See Casino,) De Niro's character is at first seemingly "justified" in his frustration with Bowden to an extent, then all of the subtlety of his insanity rapidly goes out the window. Family drama surrounding generally awful people and remarkably stupid decision making lends itself even further from the control normally seen in his movies. From a victim-blaming rape scenario to a blood slip and slide, this certainly has the panache seen in Scorsese's pinnacle works, but lacks the finer touches he is traditionally known for.
Sure, Cary Grant climbs the faces of Rushmore and it's "Critically Acclaimed." I do it and I get arrested.
