I really tried with this one.. After the fourth kill - which was needlessly gruesome in a “yeah it’s super gory but it’s self-aware and darkly humorous so it’s an 80%+ on Rotten Tomatoes” kind of way - I was pretty sure I got the point and decided not to waste anymore of my evening.
Friendly tip: if you’re planning on reading the book before watching this, don’t. The movie strays so far from the plot and tone of the book that it really kept me from enjoying it on its own merits. I have no doubt that most people will enjoy this film, but my expectations of sticking to the book were set incorrectly by the first film.
Maybe I’m just getting softer or maybe this movie was just that good. Either way, the ending had me bawling.
