Second viewing, I feel like my opinion is cemented more clearly. I mean, it’s Taxi Driver, it’s about as perfect as a film can be.

It’s a weird feat to make a film whose world is simultaneously alive and dead. The unmoving camera harmonizes with clear, crisp sound design and deceptively intricate blocking. The muted landscape punctuates every drop of saturation. Each pale face which wrinkles in sorrow or fear or anger splinters through the frozen atmosphere which surrounds it.
