I haven’t really anticipated a ton of movies this year, but after loving Parasite, Bong Joon-Ho’s follow up, Mickey 17 was definitely at the top of the list.

This film was such a tonal switch up from Parasite, and I love that. Joon-Ho could’ve easily tried to one up what he did in 2019, but instead he went in the direction of lightheartedness, backed by a beautifully crafted sci-fi backdrop.

I’ve never really felt exhausted after watching a movie before until this one. Gaspar Noé somehow packed the most viscerally unnerving viewing experience I’ve ever had, into such a deceivingly compact runtime. At one point I even started to read through the thread, but since it was so many years past the initial buzz, there was basically no incentive for me to stay locked in for damn near a hundred and fifty posts. Still, from what I’d heard and from the bit I did read, I knew the story was a wilddd one. It took…

After seeing Sean Baker’s The Florida Project pretty recently, I was really eager to see another one of his works. As expected from Baker, Anora was another film based around the life of someone in the margins. Someone who’s seen, but almost never in a complete sense. And for better or worse, Anora, more so than his other works, challenges us to fill in the gaps between the seen and unseen.

Transience is the word that’s staying in my head…
