2019 felt like one of the great years for cinema and if Tarantino had released this in any other, he’d have had the film of the year. And it’s not even his best. It is his most heartwarming and dare I say quaint. Then you get the last act. It’s the best fairy tale of 2019.
I’m not sure if Psychedelic Horror is already genre but it is now.
If losing one’s mind to drugs is a rational fear then here comes Ari Aster to make a movie about losing one’s agency.
The mechanics of the plot are simple, horrific and believable- my criteria for good horror.
From there, the film plays a game of inversion where all expected horror tropes are tweaked just enough to where the viewer asks themselves what’s really happening.
