My first time seeing this and while I can’t compare to Fincher’s beloved remasters I can’t imagine watching this any other way than the scuffed home scan of an old theatre reel I ended up choosing. Genuinely awe-inspiring.

The structure is genius. You know what Threads is by reputation, so you constantly wait for the penny to drop, making the (very engaging) kitchen sink drama of the first half almost unbearable to sit through. Then it happens and you’d give anything to go back. The redheaded woman and her dead baby is an unforgettable image. A singular work of doom and misery.

A few people walked out during the movie’s longest scene, which I understand entirely as it was sadistic seemingly purely for the sake of sadism. I stuck it out because it had started raining as I came in and I didn’t want to get wet.

Anyway when it’s not being outright unpleasant it’s extremely dull. Nothingness punctuated by nastiness, to borrow a phrase.

Udo Kier coming out on the Piazza Grande stage absolutely shithammered was better than the actual movie, which is decent but failed to ever capture me. It probably didn’t help that I always had hall my brain on the bus timetable though. If you’re going to Locarno, do not stay up near Orselina and expect public transport to have you covered late in the evening. I will not be making that mistake again.

I should say that Kier and Hayman both give stellar performances and the directing is not without merit. Not sure why this didn’t work for me really.
