The ideology of this film is obviously rancid but shout-out to the saccharine music, trope-reliant and breathless plot, heavy-handed writing that at one point makes me think Smith's character is a domestic abuser (which I don't think the film wants you to think—but why else does the wife roll over when Smith demands custody?), and sentimentalisation beyond recognition and of interest of a true story. A stinker for the ages, this one.

The Holdovers 2023
A children's fantasy dressed up as a penetrating drama. But so very competent throughout.

Mikey and Nicky 1976
A year and a half after watching this film and I can still review it because I bear its impression so strongly even now. Its portrayal of a toxic, intoxicating relationship, and of how ending it gives a real but melancholy freedom even though the only way it can be ended is abruptly, cruelly, unfairly, arbitrarily, will stay with me forever.
