The Father 2020
By far the best film of 2020 (which obviously isn’t saying much but still an achievement in my eyes). Hopkins might be the best performance of the last year too.

The Whale 2022
The Whale is an interesting one for sure.
The praise placed upon Brendan Fraser’s ability to transform into the character of Charlie is justified as he delivers something truly powerful. However, every actor around him (except, for the most part, Hong Chau) chews up the screenplay and spits out their lines with such unnecessary and cheesy exaggeration. The overacting leads to several scenes of the film feeling disjointed emotionally which in turn makes it hard to take the side arcs…
