Now this is more like this! Really enjoyed this; remember watching the us remake ages ago but this is much better, very taut and spooky and I liked seeing the fashion and interior design of late nineties japan — Altho I was disappointed that it doesn’t feature the scene of a horse going crazy on a boat

I *respected* this film but I didn’t really enjoy it, sorry! I just wanted to get drunk and watch some frothy popcorn affair but my brother convinced me to watch this, which meant I was seething with resentment the entire time. I liked the retro 1950s UFO paranoia vibe and it’s very stylish (particularly for how low the budget was) but ultimately found it quite dry. Maybe it would have worked better as a radio play

The story of an embittered, narcissistic writer with an alcohol problem who returns to their dreary, provincial hometown? Hang on a sec — I didn’t realise I was tuning into a biopic of my own life! 🤣 But seriously, folks, I enjoyed this. Charlize Theron is fantastic and her character is perfectly balanced between obnoxious and vulnerable — I found the ending very sad indeed!
