I think Bong Joon-Ho earned this one. After parasites tightly crafted and perfectly executed production, it’s pretty clear he just wanted to have fun now. It’s an over the top satire of the topics Bong Joon-Ho has covered before, and personally I think it works.
It won’t blow your socks off, but it’s an enjoyable ride.
There was also some very tropes depictions of woman that aren’t great, like the black woman being shown as sex-crazed and violent, the scheming…
I think the atmosphere and raw vibe are unparalleled, with everything from the acting to costuming to sets to sound all bringing their A game. I just can’t help but feel the story could’ve been executed a bit better. Maybe it’s because the tenseness starts from the start, the build feels very slow, so it’s watching this guy fall in and out of crazy repeatedly, rather than a true build until the end. Dafoe ate it up as per usual, I want to see more of him playing an old sailor
