Falling in Love 1984
One of those films you stumble across by accident, a forgotten gem buried in the vast catalogue of Robert de Niro and Meryl Streep movies. It's Brief Encounter set in 80's New York, basically.
Sometimes you've just got to run with a film for what it is. Falling in Love won't change your life and it doesn't push any cinematic boundaries, but it's a sincere love story held together by the chemistry of two of the great film actors.
A (not so) guilty pleasure.

The Substance 2024
The Substance is the kind of film you can’t look away from, even when what you’re seeing isn’t very pleasant. It’s a highly entertaining, beautifully shot, propulsive thriller with an important message.
The final act left me feeling a little bewildered, but I couldn’t help but be drawn in by the audacity of it. The more I think about it, the more it works, so it definitely demands a rewatch.
This is such a wild, singular film.

Inside Out 2015
Inside Out should have made history. It should have been the first animated feature to win Best Picture at the Oscars. The fact it wasn't even nominated (only three have before) signals to me that some folk - looking at you Academy voters - still see animation as a form for children, as "lesser" than live-action films.
Obviously there was a moment where this specific film could have been nominated (won) and that moment's passed now, but in a time…
