Blue Velvet 1986
David Lynch had the unique ability to capture on screen such visceral, deep human emotions. Watching this in a theater full of people laughing their way through some of the most upsetting parts of this movie made me realize that not everyone is able to connect, or willing to connect, with art in this way. Lynch movies will always be a special brand of beautiful and there’s something so ineffable about the way they stick with you. I saw a robin on my way to work this morning, and because of Blue Velvet and its optimistic ending, I have to believe love can be enough.

Empire of the Sun 1987
Better and so different from what I expected. The second act really drags, but the third is really excellent and has some really powerful moments.

Megalopolis 2024
Where do I even begin? What a mess.
I’m willing to suspend however much disbelief that I need to in order to engage with a film. However, that requires the rules of the movie to make sense. The rules of this universe make no fucking sense so I was really left with feeling left behind in a movie that was so insistent upon itself that it’s insufferable.
Somehow it’s not heightened enough? If the dialogue is going to be like…

Trap 2024
An insanely fun cat and mouse game also somehow about work-life balance and being a dad? I was smiling ear to ear nearly the whole time. Josh Hartnett is not only giving an insanely good performance but he’s stupid hot too. I loved the M. Night cameo and the mid-credits scene! This is an all timer for me.
